Total Eclipse of the Art
Now that the buzz of the recent total eclipse has passed and its eventual hangover has finally subsided (except for those few proud souls who dared look directly into the abyss, despite warning to the contrary) we here at CS get a little misty thinking back to that day. It was a rare moment when so many of us across the U.S. were united in a singular mission; to ditch work for a few minutes and crane our necks skyward to get a glimpse of a celestial phenomenon using what we could only hope were “legit” eclipse glasses. So, to recapture the feels, we thought we’d share a fun eclipse kit we designed and sent to our clients and vendors to help them celebrate the day.
While parts of our country were able to witness a total solar eclipse in 1979 and 1991, the last time a large portion of our country was able to view this space oddity was almost 100 years ago in 1918. When we added up those years and averaged them out we came up with 1962. What could it mean? Most likely nothing, but it did influence the look of our project. We styled our eclipse kit with a fun throwback look that harkened back to the days of Area 51 and ultra top secret documentation.
Our concept was to send our clients and vendors a pair of eclipse glasses in a custom “for your eyes only” package. Fittingly, they were sent in a non-descript black envelope. Quelle intrigue! To provide context to the potential contents, it was stamped with a thermo-sensitive, touch reactive stamp that surreptitiously revealed an image of the eclipse when exposed to heat. The letter inside was stylized as a redacted document with heavy black editing that only left a custom message visible. We also included a pair of evidentiary “file photos” featuring messages that were just cryptic enough to build on the mystique of the piece.
Our CultureSpan fam loved the kit as much as we enjoyed creating it, and it was fun to hear the reactions they shared with us. We love to put this kind of energy and creativity into every endeavor we undertake whether it’s for us, or our clients. If you want the CultureSpan team to help you with your next project, from transcreation to creative concept development, give us a shout. But don’t wait until the next eclipse.
